Tips on Ordering discs
As you probably know, there are two formats for dvd writing. DVD+R, +ve (positive) and DVD-R, -ve (negative).
It is generally considered that the +ve format is better quality(though tends to be slightly more expensive than the -ve), but now tests show that the -ve format has better compatability.
When purchasing discs it is essential that you know which type your machine takes as the +ve only works with +ve machines and vice versa.
Though most new writers can now take both formats.
Both the +r and the -r discs are one time only discs ideal for films, back up data, or for home movies.
The +rw and -rw discs are just like video tapes in that they can be recorded on over and over again.

The speed of discs is normally shown as 4x, 8x, 16x etc. This is the max speed that the discs can burn at, providing your writer can work to that speed also. The discs are all compatable down the way. ie. a 4x speed will work in a 16 speed writer, but just burn at 4x speed.

Tips on Copying discs
As most discs are the standard 4.7 gb, when copying films with your dvd writer on your pc you will have to use a program such as dvdshrink to "shrink" the original film to fit the disc. This does not apply to dvd recorders however, as they determine how much to fit on a disc by varying the recording speed (hq,sp, lp etc).

To fit more than 1 film onto a disc you first need to shrink them with dvd shrink then use tmpeg to burn them. You can download tmpeg here
